Spring House rallied from sixth in the final half-mile to win Saturday’s $150,000 San Luis Obispo Handicap at Santa Anita, his first start of 2008.
Ridden by leading jockey Garrett Gomez, Spring House took the lead in the final furlong and pulled clear to win by 2 1/4 lengths over 20-1 Church Service. On the Acorn, who was second in the 2007 San Luis Obispo, closed through the stretch to finish third in the field of eight.
Gomez had Spring House well off the pace for the first mile, tracking the mare Sohgol, who led through a slow pace of 47.33 and 1:12.59.
Spring House moved closer to the front with a rally on the inside at the end of the backstretch, and took over from Porfido in early stretch. Spring House ran 1 1/2 miles on turf in 2:27.21.
Owned by R.D. Hubbard and trained by Julio Canani, Spring House, 6, earned $90,000. A gelding by Chester House, Spring House has won 6 of 30 starts and $544,284.
