Santa Anita to replace racing surface

Santa Anita will replace its synthetic main track following the conclusion of the current winter-spring meeting on April 20, track president Ron Charles said on Wednesday.
Speaking at a daylong panel on synthetic tracks convened by the California Horse Racing Board, Charles said a decision has not been made on what surface will be installed later this year.
Santa Anita hosts the Breeders' Cup in late October and has been awarded the 2009 Cup as well.
"This is a surface that will only last us until the end of the meet," he said. "We'll have to make a major change at the end of this meeting. It's going to be critical. I've got an open mind. We're going to go back out and weigh everything. Hopefully, we'll make the best decision possible."
Santa Anita installed a Cushion Track surface last summer, but the surface failed to drain after a series of rainstorms in January and early February, leading to the cancellation of 11 days of racing. In early February, the track underwent a five-day renovation, installing polymers and fibers from the Australian synthetic surface, Pro-Ride.
